Sedonia A. Champlain (Narragansett Tribal Member “Dancing Waters”) was born in Manhattan, NY to the proud parents of Harold and Mazel Champlain on February 10, 1943. She was the second oldest of eight children.

Sedonia attended High School of Industrial Arts (NY) in 1960, School of Visual Arts (NY) in 1965, Arts Students League (NY) in 1972, and Fashion Institute of Technology (NY) in 1978.

Sedonia married Dennis L. Smith II in and moved to Cambria Heights, NY. Two children came from this union. This marriage ended years later. In 1962, she was employed by Plenum Press Publishing Company.

In 1978, she was employed by Diana Burrelli, Inc. In 1979, she was employed by Regents Publishing Company & ABC Publishing Company. In 1967, she was employed by American Journal of Nursing Company. In 1981, she was re-employed by Regents Publishing Company. In 1983, she was employed by Hamer Advertising Company & International Thomson Transportation. In 1986, she was employed by Leavitt Advertising Agency & Arlen Printing Company. Sedonia was a Free-Lance Artist for many years employed by various companies.

In 1988, she became the Illustrator/Art Director for The Algonquin Indian Arts and Culture Association in assisting her father with the creation of the New England Native American Calendar. Sedonia has been a vendor for 14 years at many Powwows mostly in the New England area promoting this calendar and her art work which consisted of Native American coloring kits, T-shirts, tote bags, hats, etc. all featuring her exceptionally talented art work.

Sedonia has been a member of Sacred Heart Church for over 30 years.
“Annie,” as she was called by most of her family and friends, touched many hearts and is deeply missed. She leaves two children, Denise A. Lowe-Williams & Dennis L. Smith Champlain; three grand children, Quincy R. Lowe, Chaun A. Lowe & Rita M. Smith Champlain; two brothers, John Champlain & Harold Champlain; four sisters, Francine Haney, Deborah Mayfield, Antoinette Belt & Anastacia Lee; thirteen nieces & nephews, a host of cousins, aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.
